A filter (10) is disposed in the interior cavity of each of the axle spindle (Il) sections of a non-drive axle for a heavy duty tractor-trailer, which utilizes internally vented wheel end assemblies. Each filter (10) provides for sufficient air flow from the wheel end assembly cavity into the axle cavity to enable internal venting of any expanding gas from the wheel end assembly cavity into the axle cavity, thereby preventing excessive pressure build-up in the wheel end assembly and possible reduction of the life expectancy of the wheel end assembly main seal. Depending on the filter (10) embodiment employed, the filter prevents or at least lessens the likelihood of migration of contaminates such as oxide scale from the axle cavity into the wheel end assembly cavity, thereby preventing or lessening the likelihood that such contaminates will cause premature wear of the wheel end assembly bearings or main seal.

Ce filtre (10) est placé dans la cavité interne de chaque section de fusée d'essieu (11) d'un essieu non moteur de tracteur avec semi-remorque lourde utilisant des ensembles roues ventilés intérieurement. Chaque filtre (10) assure un débit d'air suffisant provenant de la cavité existant dans l'ensemble roue vers la cavité ménagée dans l'essieu pour permettre une ventilation interne de tout gaz se propageant de l'ensemble roue vers la cavité d'essieu, ce qui évite la formation d'une pression excessive dans l'ensemble roue, laquelle pression excessive peut avoir comme corollaire une diminution éventuelle de la vie moyenne du joint principal de l'ensemble roue. Selon le type de filtre (10) utilisé, il est possible d'éviter ou au moins de réduire le risque de migration de produits contaminants, des oxydes notamment, de la cavité d'essieu vers la cavité de l'ensemble roue et, partant, d'éviter ou de réduire le risque selon lequel ces contaminants pourraient faire s'user prématurément les paliers ou le joint principal de l'ensemble roue.
