Disclosed is a compound shown by the general formula [1]: (see fig. I) wherein R1 and R2 are independently a lower alkyl group, R3 and R4 are independently a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group, and X is a divalent hydrocarbon group, or its hydrate. This compound is useful as a polymerization initiator for polymerization of an .alpha.,.beta.-ethylenically unsaturated monomer.
