A back guard (125, 325, 350) is provided for protecting the back against impact. The back guard is worn by a wearer over the back. The guard comprises interlocked members (122, 122A-D, 311-315 351A-C, 351L, 351R). Each of the members is curved to conform to the spine. In particular, a recess (127) is provided for the spinous process to prevent impact thereto during collision.
