ABSTRACT In a sub-sea gas and oil well it is conventional to pump methanol or other chemicals through a flexible hose running down the well annulus to a chemical injection valve. The invention involves providing an annulus control back pressure valve between the chemical injection hose and the chemical injection valve. The back pressure valve utilizes the annulus pressure to oppose the chemical pressure in the hose, whereby when the chemical pressure in the flexible hose exceeds a predetermined value related to the annulus pressure the back pressure valve is forced open, but when the chemical pressure is below the predetermined value the back pressure valve closes thereby maintaining in the flexible hose a sufficiently high internal pressure to prevent collapse of the hose. Continual collapsing and expanding of the hose is thus eliminated preventing any possible rupture of the hose.
