A back support (20) for a bath lift features a pivot-mounted backrest (24) which can be supported by a swivel arm (28). The swivel arm (29) has a laterally protruding runner (32) which engages in a slotway (34) of a tee web (36) on the backrest (24). In the bottom portion of a longitudinally extended slotway section (48) is an adjoining bypass track section (54) which forms a track loop featuring a non-return stop (56). The backrest (24) can be rotated forwards slightly beyond its inclined position and thereafter pushed back into its supported inclined position. A subsequent brief release rotation in the forward direction causes the runner (32) of the swivel arm (28) to pass over a non-return stop (56) and into the bypass track section, as a result of which the backrest is released for rotating downwards towards the flat position.
