A mirror pane for a back surface mirror, suitable for use with rearview mirrors in motor vehicles, includes a front side and a back side, a transparent carrier plate, a reflective coating on the back side of the carrier plate, and a transparent, scratch-free, dirt and water repellent protective coating applied as the outermost coating on the front side of the carrier plate. The protective coating may cover the interstitial border zone between the reflective coating and the carrier plate as well as the side edges. The protective coating may be an inorganic-organic nano-composite, gradient coating with fluoridized organic side chains.
