The present invention relates to a device and a method for applying traction to the back and neck of a patient. The traction device is inexpensive, relatively attractive and inconspicuous when mounted on a chair for use by the patient, and can be used with most household chairs. The device comprises a height adjustable standard for attachment to a chair back with flexible metal strap extending over the top of the chair back from the top of the standard and a head engaging portion attached to the front of the strap. When used with a chair which can recline, the user can increase tension on the back by pushing rearwardly on the recline so that the distance from the seat of the chair to the head engaging portion is increased.
