An illuminated sign construction comprises a main housing and a secondary housing removably fitted at its surrounding frame within the main housing. The secondary housing has a translucent panel and a transparent panel held separated from one another by the frame of the secondary housing to define a pocket in which signage material is fitted between the two panels. The sign construction further includes a lighting assembly within the main housing behind the secondary housing. The lighting assembly comprises a light producing member which casts direct light and a reflector which reflects light from the light producing member at the secondary housing. The frame of the secondary housing comprises a main frame portion and a frame piece which is releasable from the main frame portion when the secondary housing is removed from the main housing. The frame piece, when released from the main frame portion, opens the pocket in the secondary housing and additionally pulls the signage material from the pocket.
