An integral backpack/upper body garment (10) comprises an upper body garment (16) having a back panel (52) to which a split backpack is attached or attachable. A front backpack assembly (18) with shoulder straps (58) is attached/attachable to the front face of the back panel (30), and a rear backpack assembly (14) including storage compartments (34A, 34B and 34C) is attached/attachable to the rear face of the back panel (32). A circumferential garment compartment (28) has two walls (64, 62), one attached to the front assembly (18) and one attached to the rear assembly (14). The garment compartment (28) encircles the rear assembly (14). The garment (16) may be rolled up or folded into the garment compartment (28) and the two walls (64, 62) joined by a closure (50) to protectively enclose the garment (16) therein when it is not worn. The backpack formed by joining the rear assembly (14) and front assembly (18) may be worn with or without the garment, and the garment may be worn with or without the backpack.
