2081775 9215228 PCTABS00016 A contoured backrest (24) for a wheelchair (A) may be moved to and retained in different positions and thus accommodates individuals of varying size and disabilities. The backrest (24) carries clamps (52, 70) to which outriggers (40, 42) are fitted, and these outriggers (40, 42) extend transversely across the back face of the backrest (24). The outriggers (40, 42) are laterally adjustable to accommodate wheelchairs of different widths. They have offset ends (54, 56) beyond the sides of the backrest (24), and these ends (54, 56) fit into brackets (44, 46) on back posts (16) that are part of the wheelchair (A). When the clamps (52, 70) are released, the outriggers (40, 42) may be rotated. This enables the positon of the backrest (24) to be adjusted forwardly and backwardly, upwardly and downwardly, and angularly.
