A convertible backstand for unwinding webbed material from a large diameter parent roll for further processing. The backstand can accommodate a single parent roll of webbed material, or, through the use of coupling mechanisms, can be adapted to accommodate a plurality of parent rolls. Each roll is coupled to a pair of bearings, which allow the roll to rotate independently on the shaft. A separate drive unit applies a force to the outer diameter of parent roll, causing the roll to rotate.
