A method is taught to provide an improved mobile station International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) code having at least a six digit hexadecimal SNR representation, in conjunction with modifying a Check Digit calculation procedure so as to insure backwards compatibility with an existing installed base of mobile stations having a six digit BCD SNR representation.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant d'obtenir un code IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) amélioré de station mobile ayant au moins une représentation de numéro de série hexadécimale à six chiffres ainsi que la modification d'une procédure de calcul du chiffre de contrôle afin d'assurer une compatibilité descendante avec une base installée existante de stations mobiles ayant une représentation de numéro de série à six chiffres décimale codée en binaire.
