- 1 - Abstract The present invention is directed to a collagenase gene derived from bacteria of the species Vibrio alginolyticus. The invention is further directed to a recombinant vector containing the gene, a host cell transformed with a plasmid containing the gene and a process for the production of a collagenase by using the host cells. The collagenase of the present invention can be used in the treatment of various injuries, particularly those resulting from injuries to substrates having a structure rich in collagen, e.g. burns, ulcers, etc. It is also useful in the treatment of dental caries and for tenderizing meat.
