There is provided an assay suitable for the typing of bacterial strains. In the assay a predetermined amount of phage is combined with a bacterial isolate of unknown strain, the mixture being located in a suitable container. The mixture of phage and bacteria is conveniently held in a liquid or semi-liquid medium facilitating interaction of the two species. The extent of bacterial growth in the presence of the phage is measured by conventional means, preferably by means of an OD reading. Desirably the phage is retained in the selected container, which is conveniently a micro-titre plate, through use of a fixant such as 5 % gelatin.
L'invention concerne une méthode de détermination adaptée au typage de souches bactériennes. Dans cette méthode on combine une quantité prédéterminée de phages à un isolat bactérien de souche inconnue, le mélange se trouvant dans un récipient approprié. On maintient le mélange de phages et de bactéries, de préférence, dans un milieu liquide ou semi-liquide facilitant l'interaction des deux espèces. L'étendue de la croissance bactérienne en présence des phages est mesurée par des moyens classiques, de préférence à l'aide d'une mesure par densité optique. Idéalement, les phages sont retenus dans le récipient sélectionné, lequel est de préférence une plaque de microtitrage, à l'aide d'un agent de fixation, tel que 5 % de gélatine.
