The invention concerns an apparatus in a bag labelling machine for the attachment of strip sections such as labels to a passing bag surface, comprising an application cylinder with a gripper which can be actuated to open and close, and with a blade interacting with this gripper. according to the invention, in this bag machine the blade is arranged on a diversion cylinder running parallel to and cooperating with the application cylinder. The diversion cylinder also includes a gripper which interacts with a blade arranged on the application cylinder for removing unused strips or labels on the occasions when a bag is not simultaneously provided. Reliably removing these excess strips or labels helps to prevent jamming or malfunctioning in the machine.
