A floor cleaning apparatus is provided with a novel dirt cup and filter arrangement. The floor cleaning apparatus comprises a nozzle assembly including an intake opening and a canister assembly including a dirt cup receiver and a separate filter receiver in the dirt cup receiver. Additionally, the apparatus includes a suction generator that is carried on either the nozzle assembly or the canister assembly. Further, a dirt cup is held in the dirt cup receiver.
