A bait container having one or more sections for the slow release of bait, which are separated by layers of water soluble material. In use, the bait container is lowered into the water, having at least one section for the bait accessible to the catch. The water soluble material then degrades over a period of time, permitting at least another section of bait to become accessible to the catch. In this manner, the water soluble material between the bait acts as a timed release, allowing the bait to fish longer. The unit can be placed in the water for long term fishing, or a peel back tab can be removed from the bait container so as to provide for the immediate release of the bait. The invention therefore provides a means to prolong the useful life of the bait, particularly bait for crustaceans such as lobsters and crabs.
