ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A flow meter for measuring the rate of the flow of a loose particulate material is provided with a sensor plate secured to one end of the balance beam. The sensor plate deflects a gravity flow of the material and transforms the deflection force thereof into a measuring or governing signal. According to the invention, the balance beam is pivoted about an inclined axis, whereby it is possible to selectively employ only such components of the deflection force which is independent of the instant coefficient of friction of the material at the sensor plate. Alternatively, a component of the force may be used which is dependent on the coefficient of friction to a maximum degree. The apparatus thus over- comes the drawbacks of the known flow meters of this type which have always been subject to errors due to variations in the coefficient of friction of the material.
