Large round bales are stacked with a first row of bales arranged side by side, standing on end and a second row of bales lying on their sides on top of the first row. The sides of the bales are more resistant to weather penetration, so that the top row of end to end bales protects the lower row of standing bales. A bale carrier for transporting the bales and stacking them in this way consists of a support which supports a row of bales side by side along one side and a row of bales end to end along the other. The support can be tilted from a horizontal position to an unloading position in which the bales are deposited from the support onto the ground in the desired stacked arrangement.
