ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides method and apparatus for effectively closing and sealing bags wherein the bag conforms to the shape of the contents, such as a block of asbestos, on all covered sides thereof. Before closure the bag has its opening directed generally upwardly. During the closure operation, opposed sides of the bag at the opening are held by vacuum against vertically movable and outwardly pivotable vacuum plates. A sensor determines the position of the exposed surface of the bag contents and the vacuum plates are positioned in response thereto so that the pivot axis thereof is coplanar with the exposed surface. Gripping means on the vacuum plate grips the upper edges of the open bag so that when the vacuum plates pivot outwardly a pair of outwardly projecting delta-shaped flaps are formed. The bag then advances to a closure former whereat first one, and then the other flap, is rotated through 180° so that the first flap overlies the exposed surface and the second flap overlies the first flap. Adhesive may be applied at various stages to ensure that the closure is permanent and that the bag is hermetically sealed. The result is a sealed bag that conforms to the shape of the contents on all sides even though the exposed surface of the contents did not originally lie at an optimum or average elevation. Thus the present invention will accommodate variations in the height of the contents from bag to bag to ensure a close fit of the sealed bag to the contents thereof.
