-14- A bale handler is arranged to mount on a bed of a pick up truck for handling large round bales. The bale handler includes a pair of frame members mounted spaced apart on the bed such that a fifth wheel hitch may be mounted therebetween. A cradle is mounted on a first end of the frame members wherein the cradle is arranged to support a bale thereon. A pick up assembly is pivotally mounted on a second end of the frame members. The pick up assembly is selectively separable from the frame members. A pair of pick up arms pivotally mounted spaced apart on the pick up assembly are arranged to extend rearwards to engage the bale. A pair of engaging members being arranged to penetrate opposing end of the bale are mounted on an outer end of the respective pick up arms for securing the bale to the pick up arms. A hydraulic cylinder controls pivotal motion of the pick up arms to engage and disengage the bale. An additional pair of hydraulic cylinders controls pivotal motion of the pick up assembly about the frame members for lifting a bale off the ground and onto the cradle.
