The problem, on which this invention is based, is perceived to be that the brakes/rollers of the prior art, which act to retard the feeding of wrapping medium from a wrapping medium supply roll, so that it is wrapped firmly around a bale and tears off or can be cut easily, are relatively complicated. This problem is solved according to the invention by providing a power-operated brake that includes an arm that is mounted for pivoting vertically and carries a contact element for engaging the supply roll, with an extensible and retractable motor being coupled to the arm and controlled for selectively varying the force applied on the roll.
