This invention is an apparatus (10) for stabilizing a predetermined area on a heart or other organ of a patient to enable a surgical procedure, the apparatus comprising a bifurcated member (30) having two elongated prongs (32), and an elongated handle segment (50) pivotally and rotatably attached to the bifurcated member (30). The handle segment (50) can be movably attached to a rib retractor or other surgical device (20) so that a person is not required to hold the handle segment (50). The preferred embodiment of the apparatus of the present invention further comprises a device (60) to lock or frictionally hold the bifurcated member (30) in a desired position both on the organ, and relative to the handle segment (50) during the surgical procedure.

Le dispositif se compose d'un élément bifurqué (30) ayant deux branches allongées (32) et d'une partie poignée (50) allongée fixée à l'élément bifurqué (30) de manière pivotante et rotative. La partie poignée (50) peut être rattachée de manière mobile à un écarteur ou à un autre instrument chirurgical (20) si bien qu'il n'est pas nécessaire qu'une personne tienne la partie poignée (50). La version préférée du dispositif comporte en outre un système (60) permettant de bloquer ou de maintenir par friction l'élément bifurqué (30) dans la position désirée à la fois au niveau de l'organe et par rapport à l'élément poignée (50) pendant l'opération chirurgicale.
