BALLAST UNIT FOR GAS DISCHARGE LAMPS Abstract of the Disclosure A ballast unit system for various types of gas discharge lamps, in particular for fluorescent tubes, mercury and sodium vapor lamps, comprising a ballast choke. The lamp circuit is arranged in parallel with at least one semi- conductor switching means or a triggering means which are designed to operate at the magnetic saturation bend for the purpose of developing the firing voltage required for lamp starting. In cases where heated lamps are used the switching or triggering means are designed for brief preheating of the lamps with increased rated current. The starter has no mechanical or moving parts, thereby minimizing wear and maximizing dependability.
