It is intended to provide a balloon catheter for tentatively occluding a vessel which can serve as a guide wire, has favorable handling properties so as to match complicatedly curled and branched vessels such as coronary artery and brain vessels, can be inserted into a vessel following up a guide wire, and can be inserted to a sufficient depth to attain a peripheral site of a vessel. The above-described balloon catheter has a balloon made of a highly elongating material having a break elongation of 300% to 1100%, a shaft having an outer diameter of from 0.014 in. to 0.018 in. and being made of a highly elastic material having a modulus of elasticity of 1 GPa or above, and a lumen for following up a guide wire at the tip of the catheter.

L'invention concerne un cathéter à ballonnet pour occlusion vasculaire provisoire, qui peut servir de fil guide. Ses caractéristiques de manipulation favorables permettent au cathéter de s'adapter à des vaisseaux à courbures et ramifications complexes, du type artère coronaire et vaisseaux cérébraux, et permettent une insertion vasculaire selon un fil guide, avec une capacité d'insertion à une profondeur suffisante pour atteindre tel ou tel site périphérique de vaisseau. Ledit cathéter présente un ballonnet en matériau à fort allongement, dont l'élongation à la rupture est comprise entre 300 % et 1 100 %, et il comporte un axe de diamètre externe compris entre 0,014 et 0,018 pied en matériau hautement élastique à module d'élasticité supérieur ou égal à 1 Gpa, ainsi qu'une lumière pour le suivi d'un fil guide à l'extrémité du cathéter.
