Balloon tamponade devices (11) for treating bleeding sites within the up- per digestive tract (e.g. esophageal or upper gastric bleeding sites, or duodenal, pyloric or distal gastric bleeding sites) comprise a tube (12) having proximal and distal open ends and at least one inflatable balloon (15) mounted over the tube (12). Preferably, two balloons (15 and 17) are mounted over the tube (12), and inflation lumens (16) are provided for each. In a device for treating es- ophageal or upper gastric bleeding sites, the balloons are an esophageal bal- loon (15) and a gastric balloon (17). In a device (23) for treating duodenal, py- loric or distal gastric bleeding sites, the balloons are a duodenal balloon (25)and a gastric balloon (27). A bridle (19) is attached to the tube (12), and is adapted to extend up the esophagus to allow the device to be secured in place having the proximal open end of the tube (12) positioned within the digestive tract to allow for normal feeding and swallowing functions. A method for plac- ing a balloon tamponade device (11) as generally described above is also de- scribed.
