The present invention provides techniques for adapting the portion of the frequency spectrum allocated to Land Mobile Radio (LMR) for use as downbanded cellular channels. These downbanded cellular channels can be employed, for example, either to supplement a cellular operator's system capacity or as a stand alone cellular-style system which can provide complementary geographic coverage which may, for example, bridge existing cellular systems. According to a first aspect of the present invention, the conventional channelization of the LMR spectrum is redefined in a manner which provides significant advantages. More specifically, for every six originally specified, 25 KHz LMR channels, five new 30 KHz DBC channels are specified. In this way, complete compatibility with cellular systems, e.g., allowing roaming between cellular and DBC systems, is achieved according to the present invention.

La présente invention concerne des techniques d'adaptation de la partie du spectre de fréquences affectée au service radio mobile terrestre en vue d'une utilisation en tant que canaux cellulaires par division en bandes. De tels canaux cellulaires conviennent particulièrement par exemple, soit comme complément momentané de capacité du système d'un exploitant de réseau cellulaire, soit comme système autonome de type cellulaire offrant une couverture géographique supplémentaire et capable d'établir notamment des passerelles avec les systèmes cellulaires existants. Une première réalisation de l'invention consiste à redéfinir le découpage conventionnel en canaux du spectre utilisé pour le service radio mobile terrestre de façon à en tirer des avantages notables. En l'occurrence, l'invention consiste, à la place des six canaux de 25 kHz définis à l'origine pour le service radio mobile terrestre, à définir cinq nouveaux canaux de 30 kHz divisibles en bandes. La technique de la présente invention permet une compatibilité totale avec les systèmes cellulaires, par exemple en rendant possibles les passages entre les systèmes cellulaires et les systèmes à division en bandes.
