In a sewing machine for tacking the band ends of a waistband, a clamping device and method of operation is provided. A unitary bottom carrier plate is releasably secured to the base of the sewing machine. The plate is machined to position both ends of the waistband below a needle for the tacking operation. A clamping foot, having openings that expose the edges of the band ends, clamps the band ends between the plate and the foot. The sewing machine can then be programmed such that a single needle bartacks each of the band ends in sequence. The thread is cut as the needle moves from one band end to the other. The clamping device permits a single machine operation to finish both band ends without repositioning the workpiece. This speeds up the time consuming tacking process. The superior holding capabilities of the machine also reducing carpal tunnel injuries and related workplace stresses for workers. The one piece carrier plate extends the life of the earner plate, reduces shifting or mispositioning of the carrier plate to decrease the amount of waste product, down time and needle damage, and decreases the time required for maintenance operation. To further increase the speed of maintenance, an easy release bolting device is provided to secure the carrier plate to the sewing machine. The bolt has a stem with an internally threaded end. This end extends above the base of the sewing machine such that the carrier plate can be attached to it. A washer, and screw can then be used to secure the plate to the base.
