Bandwidth management in each network device in a switched digital video environment. Each device in a user's home and the switched digital video (SDV) device can evaluate the bandwidth requirements of a request from any device in the home and compare it to the bandwidth available at the user's home. This is done as the request is passed upstream from device to device. If there is insufficient bandwidth available, an error message is returned to the requesting device.

L'invention concerne la gestion d'une largeur de bande dans chaque dispositif réseau d'un environnement vidéo numérique commuté. Chaque dispositif du domicile d'un utilisateur et le dispositif vidéo numérique commuté (SDV) peuvent évaluer la demande d'un dispositif quelconque dudit domicile relative à ses besoins en largeur de bande et la comparer à la largeur de bande disponible au niveau du domicile de l'utilisateur, ce qui est réalisé lorsque la demande est passée en amont d'un dispositif à un autre. Lorsque la largeur de bande disponible est insuffisante, un message d'erreur est retourné au dispositif demandeur.
