A heat shield for a food-preparation appliance such as a barbecue grill covers exposed surfaces of the appliance which become hot during use. In the preferred embodiments, the shield includes a thermal barrier in the from of a metal screen, mesh curtain or perforated sheet, and means for attaching the barrier to a portion of the appliance in spaced-apart relation to the outer surface. The invention finds particular application in barbecue grills of the kettle-type, which may include an upper, generally circular lid-receiving rim, in which case the barrier may assume a generally cylindrical shape when attached. In this particular arrangement, the means for attaching the barrier to the grill may include one or more rigid members connecting at least a portion of the upper edge of the screen to at least a portion of the rim of the grill.
