A barbecue-type cooking device adapted for use with a solid combustible material. The cooking device has a substantially flat base plate. An inner peripheral wall extends substantially perpendicularly from the base plate. The inner peripheral wall has an inner wall venting aperture extending therethrough. An outer peripheral wall is also provided. The outer peripheral wall being configured and sized to be slidably mounted outwardly relatively to the inner peripheral wall with its lower peripheral edge abuttingly resting on the base plate. In such a position, the outer peripheral wall is in a substantially contiguous and concentric relationship relatively to the inner peripheral wall. The outer peripheral wall being rotatable about its longitudinal axis relatively to the inner peripheral wall. The outer peripheral wall having an outer wall venting aperture extending therethrough. The cooking device also having a grid member. One of the features of the device relates to its inherent ventilating components that allow for the creation of an up draft of air through the solid combustible material. When the outer peripheral wall is rotated about its longitudinal axis, relatively to the inner peripheral wall, the inner wall venting aperture and the outer wall venting aperture are adapted to be be put approximately in register with each other to modulate the flow rate of an up draft of air flowing into the open top container through the venting apertures. The cooking device also has a lid that is configured and sized so as to enclose the open top receptacle. The cooking device further having an inner rim and an outer rim extending substantially perpendicularly from the base plate. The inner rim and the outer rim defining a substantially annular channel. The channel being filled with a sand-like material. Another feature of the cooking device resides in the fact that once the lid is mounted over the container, the sand like material acts as an efficient air-tight seal for depriving the solid combustible material of oxygen and thus extinguishing the brazier.
