An alarm system uses the menacing sounds of a dog to scare away intruders. The alarm system includes a microphone for detecting noise, a comparator for comparing the detected noise level to a reference level so as to determine whether the detected noise is a potential intruder, sound recordings of different excited dogs, and a speaker for broadcasting a user-selected recording. A controller initiates broadcasting of a selected recording if the comparator determines that a detected noise is an intruder. The controller varies the volume of the broadcast recording to simulate movement of a dog about the interior of a dwelling or enclosure.
