SPECIFICATION ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A barking drum rotatable about a horizontal axis has a plurality of parallel ridge-like lifting elements on its inside wall. The lifting elements extend longitudinally of the drum and are inclined to its axis so that in moving upwardly as the drum rotates they raise the back ends of logs in the drum higher than the front ends without causing length- wise sliding of the logs. A sliding gate is disposed to be positioned transversely of the drum discharge outlet for controlling the log retention time in the drum.
