With respect to a gene involved in the determination of the row type and ear morphology of a barley, the location of the gene on a chromosome and the structure of the gene are now provided. There is found a possibility of modifying the row type or ear morphology of a barley by introducing the gene (Vrs1 gene) into the barley to control the expression in the barley. There is also found a possibility of increasing the resistance to fusarium head blight in the barley. It becomes possible to produce a barley having a trait suitable for a desired application by modifying the row type or ear morphology of the barley in this manner with good efficiency.
