Disclosed herein is a composition for barrier layers for use in insulative cabinet wall structures, particularly those used in appliances such as refrigerators and dishwashers. The compositions of the barrier layer is resistant to the action of polyurethane foam blowing agents, and has (i) an effective amount of a modified polyolefin, which is most preferably, a polyethylene modified with a compound selected from the group consisting of maleic anhydride, maleic acid, maleic anhydride derivatives, maleic acid derivatives, and mixtures thereof; and (ii) an effective amount of a rubber. Optionally, and most preferably, the barrier layer composition may further contain (iii) an effective amount of a polyolefin selected from the group consisting of polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene, and copolymers thereof. The invention further provides thermoformable composites incorporating the above-described barrier layer as well as insulative cabinet wall structures incorporating the thermoformable composite. Finally, the invention further provides a method of making a thermoformable composite incorporating the barrier layer of the invention.
L'invention se rapporte à une composition pour couches barrière conçues pour des structures de parois isolantes de caisses, et notamment à celles utilisées dans les appareils ménagers tels que les réfrigérateurs et les lave-vaisselle. La composition de la couche barrière résiste à l'action d'agents gonflants de polyuréthane cellulaire et possède (i) une quantité efficace d'une polyoléfine modifiée qui est, de préférence, un polyéthylène modifié par un composé sélectionné dans le groupe constitué de l'anhydride maléique, l'acide maléique, de dérivés d'anhydride maléique, de dérivés d'acide maléique et des mélanges de ceux-ci; et (ii) une quantité efficace d'un caoutchouc. Eventuellement, et de préférence, la composition de la couche barrière peut également comporter (iii) une quantité efficace d'une polyoléfine sélectionnée dans le groupe constitué du polyéthylène, du polypropylène, du polybutylène et de copolymères de ceux-ci. L'invention se rapporte également à des matériaux composites pouvant être formés à chaud constituant la couche barrière ci-dessus décrite ainsi qu'à des structures de parois de caisses isolantes comprenant ledit matériau composite thermoformable. L'invention se rapporte enfin à un procédé de fabrication d'un matériau composite thermoformable constituant la couche barrière de l'invention.
