The garage door operator (10) is configured to automatically generate an electronic service reminder in the form of an audible (130) or visual alert (126) based on one or more operating parameters of the garage door operator (10) meeting or exceeding a predefined threshold. The predefined threshold is variable based on the values of the operating parameters.
