Disclosed is a base film for a photographic film, which: (a) has a refractive index (nz) in the thickness direction of at least 1.498; (b) has a haze value of 2.0% or less; (c) has a tan.delta. value in one direction at 80°C by tensile viscoelasticity at 0.05 Hz, of 0.09 or less; (d) has an anti-curling ratio at 70°C of at least 45%; (e) has a thickness in the range of from 40 to 120 µm; and (f) is formed of a laminated film formed of a first layer of polyethylene-2,6- naphthalenedicarboxylate which may contain less than 0.003% by weight of inert fine particles having an average particle diameter of 0.01 to 1.5 µm and a second layer of polyethylene- 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate containing 0.003 to 0.5% by weight of inert fine particles having an average particle diameter of 0.01 to 1.5 µm, the second layer having a thickness of 10 µm or less. This base film has various performances such as anti-curling properties, transparency and lubricity, suitable for use in a photographic film.
