ABSTRACT An insert for a rail fastening system to be employed with timber bearers the insert has a shank which engages the base plate supporting the rail and a passage which receives a resilient clip which engages the rail to retain the rail in position. Extending rearwardly from behind the passage is an abutment surface which the clip engages to be resiliently deformed to apply a force to the rail. JLH/139t
