ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides basic acetanilides of the formula III III Image wherein R1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl, and R4 is halogen, lower alkoxy, nitro, amino or propionyl or trihalomethyl, and R5 is a basic group selected from di lower alkyl amino, lower cyclo alkyl amino; or a 6-membered heterocyclic group having at least one nitrogen atom in the ring. A process for preparing these acetanilides is described. The com- pounds are useful as local anaesthesia and antiarrhythmics.
