A basic aluminum composition comprising an empirical formula: Al2(OH)6-a X a where 0.5<= a <=5.0, and X is an anion of nitrogen; and wherein the composition possesses an NMR spectrum in which a -40 to +40 ppm resonance line comprises at least 60% of the total area of the NMR spectrum.
