Systems and methods for the treatment of fine tailings from secondary processing of bitumen middlings are described. The systems include a basic filter mix tank having a base, and a cationic flocculant. The methods include mixing the fine tailings with the base and cationic flocculant and filtering the mixture to produce a filter cake and a filtrate from which recycle water can be produced.
