ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A refractory material is disclosed for use in protecting furnace components from extreme temperatures and which provides satisfactory erosion resistance against basic melts. The refractory material includes a composite oxide having magnesium oxide as its main component, together with a secondary oxide which forms a high-melting-point composite oxide with magnesium oxide and iron oxides by reacting with iron oxides in a melt or calcined mass. On contact with a basic melt, oxides in the melt combine with the magnesium oxide and secondary oxide of the refractory material to form a solid-solution composite oxide which covers the refractory surface and prevents penetration by the melt. Bricks and tubes for use in smelting furnaces and the like which have been prepared having a layer of the composite oxide on a refractory substratum, exhibit excellent thermal shock resistance as well as erosion resistance against basic melts.
