ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for producing alkali metal pyro- phosphates or alkali metal polyphosphates comprises: a) feeding an aqueous solution of alkali metal orthophosphate into a hot fluidized bed of product; b) maintaining the fluidized bed to convert the alkali metal orthophosphate into product by intermolecular dehydration; and c) discharging a fraction of the fluidized bed whereby the remaining fluidized bed is ready for the next cycle. The conversion of monosodium phosphate (MSP) to sodium acid pyrophosphate (SAPP) is exemplified as an application of this process. Alkali metal polyphosphates may be prepared from alkali metal pyrophosphates by the same inter- molecular dehydration process.
