ABSTRACT An improved system is provided for processing fish which offers advantages in both product quality and effluent control. The system provides a batch-process, closed plant system for manufacturing fish meal comprising processes for the recovery of solid, gas, and liquid constituents of raw fish which are discharged from a horizontal, cylindrical high-pressure cooker, characterized in that all gas and liquid passages are formed of closed pipe members, and wherein said solid constituents are processed through a product cooler, a grinder, and a product silo; said gas constituents are processed through two cyclone-type steam condensers provided in series, a plate-type steam condenser, an uncondensable gas cooler, a first water jet ejector, three series water jet ejectors through which solutions of 5% H2SO4, 10% NaOH, and 4% NaC10 are circulated respectively, an ion exchanger, an active-carbon gas absorber, and a blower; and said liquid constituents are fed through a press water tank, a self-cleaning strainer and an oil-separator self-cleaning unit to a vacuum evaporator, so that a concentrated liquid is produced from the vacuum evaporator; said concentrated liquid then being fed to a viscous fluid dryer to be dried up as dry fish soluble, which is formed into products through a cooler and a grinder; said cyclone steam condensers being arranged to provide condensed water to be fed to the said vacuum evaporator where steam is generated; said steam being fed by suction through a plate condenser, and uncondensable gas cooler, and a further water jet ejector to the said three series water jet ejectors; said viscous fluid dryer being arranged to provide gases to be fed to the cyclone steam condensers, said horizontal, cylindrical high-pressure cooker being a cooking device which has holes for charging raw fish, high-pressure steam jet holes, steam and press water dis- charge pipes, and product discharge ports, and which is provided with heating jackets covering the body of the cooking device, a rotary driving shaft pass- ing in the center of the cylindrical body, and fixed press plates having slits formed over the surface for discharging press water at one end inside the cooker, said rotary driving shaft having rotary vane members mounted at both ends inside the cooker and having moving press plates with slits formed over the surface for discharging pres water, said moving press plates being mounted on square thread screw portions of the rotary driving shaft, said rotary vane members and said moving press plates having arms at the end of which recesses are formed for receiving stirring members loosely, said rotary vane member being provided with clutches for controlling power transmission between said member and the rotary driving shaft, said cyclone steam conden- sers having a cooling jacket which covers the body for condensing steam into water, said viscous fluid dryer being driven to rotate and having a closed, horizontal drum-like body covered externally with a thermal-medium jacket into which a cylindrical pipe frame is inserted in such a manner as not to follow the rotation of the drum, said cylindrical pipe frame having a pipe mounted therein for introducing fish fluid to be processed with a number of jet holes for spraying such fluid, protruding horizontally, said cylindrical pipe frame being provided with a scraper which extends therefrom at a given angle to the inside wall of the drum which has pipes connected thereto at one end for discharging steam and gases of bad smell generated in the drum and connected at other end to the said first water jet ejector and the said three series water jet ejectors serving as vacuum pumps.
