Abstract The present invention relates to a battery. The battery is comprised of an electrode assembly formed by alternately superposing each of at least two electrode plates of one polarity on at least one electrode plate of the other polarity with separator layers disposed there- between. A battery vessel is provided for housing the electrode assembly and is formed by a metallic outer case and a metallic cover which is joined to the case. A collector rod is provided which has a flange located inside the cover. The collector rod passes through a hole formed in the cover and through an insulating member so that one end of the rod projects from the cover. A metallic ring is fitted over the projected portion of the rod and an insulating member is disposed between the ring and the cover. The head of the projected portion of the rod is crushed. This crushed portion is embedded into a concave portion formed in the top surface of the ring. The at least two electrode plates are electrically connected to the battery vessel and the at least one electrode plate is electrically connected to the collector rod.
