CONNECTING TERMINALS TO ELECTRODES Abstract Of The Disclosure A bi-polar battery has terminals of an electrically conductive lead based or other low melt point metal with connector straps fused to the rows of lead based lugs of electrode plates, that extend from the interior of a heat sensitive battery case of plastics material through slotted pockets formed in the case walls that contain beds of glass beads which effectively isolate the electrode plates from the straps while providing support for the lugs. The ends of the battery case have insulator and positioning sections into which premolded terminals are fitted so that they can be subsequently heated into a melt for amalgamation to the lugs without heat damage to the case and so that the terminals are precisely located on the ends of the battery case. A lug-terminal amalgamation process is disclosed in which the glass beads are fed into a first slotted pocket in a one wall of the battery case through which the lugs of a first set of electrode plates extend so that a sealing and heat insulating bed is provided between the connector strap of the terminal and the body of the electrode plates within the case. Flux is applied to the lugs and the strap in the fusing areas, and the strap is subsequently installed over the lugs which protects the lugs from heat damage. An induction coil is then placed over the strap and energized for a given period of time so that the strap changes to a molten state and flows onto the bed and between the lugs to fuse therewith. The coil is removed and the terminal and lugs are cooled so that the molten metal solidifies to complete the terminal connection. The process is repeated for joining a second terminal to a second set of electrode plates of different polarity than the first set.
