ABSTRACT A vacuum cleaner has a floor engaging unit and a handle assembly pivotally mounted to the floor engaging unit. The floor engaging unit includes a vacuum nozzle and a vacuum pump. The handle assembly includes a housing having a removable cover and an externally accessible recess. A dirt tube in the housing has a port for removably receiving a porous dust bag. A flexible tube arrangement couples the dirt tube to the vacuum pump whereby dirt-laden air is drawn by the pump from the nozzle to be directed to the port. In the recess are electrical contacts which are connected to the vacuum pump. A battery assembly may be provided in the recess. The battery assembly is releasably held in the recess and has battery contacts releasably contacting the electrical contacts.
