A thin separator for batteries (10) is provided. The separator (16) includes a layer (16a) that reduces dendrite shorting and a nonwoven layer (16c). Typically, the separator also includes a laminate layer (16b) disposed between the nonwoven layer and the layer which reduces dendrite shorting. Additional nonwoven layers can also be included in the separator.
