A method for preventing or reducing sudden thermal runaway in a battery is disclosed. In this method, a thermoplastic microporous membrane having inert, thermally non-deforming particulate dispersed therein is placed between the electrodes of the battery. Thus, for example, when an external force is applied to the battery, physical contact of the electrodes is prevented by the particulate-filled separator.

L'invention porte sur un procédé qui permet d'empêcher ou de réduire un glissement thermique soudain dans un accumulateur. Selon ledit procédé, on place une membrane microporeuse thermoplastique dans laquelle sont dispersées des particules inertes, non déformables sous l'effet de la chaleur, entre les électrodes d'un accumulateur. De manière que lorsqu'une force externe est appliquée sur l'accumulateur, tout contact physique entre les électrodes est empêché par le séparateur rempli de particules.
