A battery storage compartment is provided for a vehicle. The compartment is spaced from the engine compartment to protect the battery from heat and fuel spillage and enclosed within the vehicle framework to protect it from impact with other vehicles or objects. The compartment is enclosed with a swingable door which provides easy access and also serves as a work bench onto which the battery can be slidably moved for service and/or replacement. The need for brackets to secure the battery is avoided since the door also serves to secure the battery in place.
